The Moon Bear

Very little is known about the Asiatic Black Bear or Moon Bear in comparison to other species of bear. They are similar in size and colouring to the Black Bear, the most noticeable difference being the cream/white "V" shaped marking on the bear's chest. Their fur tends to be much thicker and longer than that of a Black Bear and their ears seem disproportionately larger than the rest of their body.

Unfortunately, despite many efforts from animal protection/welfare groups, these gorgeous bears are being captured and caged in bear farms so that their bile (fluids from inside the bears' stomach) can be extracted and used in products such as traditional Chinese medicines. They are kept inside cruelly small cages which are not replaced, even as the bears grow (some having been caught as cubs and then drained throughout their lives), many Moon Bears have wounds created by the bars of the cage digging into them because of this. The bears have their claws and canines painfully removed to make the process easier for the "farmers." The process is continued until it eventually kills them.

Is it really worth the pain and fear of these animals just so that we can have medicines which can so easily be made using different ingredients and methods? Do we really have the right to decide that our health is worth more than the lives of thousands of bears?
